Blog Post SEO Checklist – How to Boost Your Traffic

Regularly publishing value content on your website is an effective way to build trust with your target audience and establish yourself as a reliable expert.

Optimizing your blog posts for search engines will improve your online visibility and help you get found by your ideal client organically.

This article guides you through the essential on-page SEO steps for your coaching blog posts.

Before you start writing your blog post:

Get clear about your Target Audience

Who are you writing your article for? What are their struggles or goals?

Start by brainstorming topics related to your niche. Think about the main categories or themes you cover and the specific questions or problems your audience might have.

Once you have a list of potential topics, it’s time to dive into keyword research tools.

Plan your content with Keyword Research

Keyword research not only helps you find out what people are actually looking for, it also gives you plenty of ideas for new blog posts.

There are several tools you can use for your keyword research, like Ubersuggest, Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or SEMrushAnswer The Public is another great tool to find out what people are asking for on the internet.

Choose your Focus Keyphrase and find Related Keywords or Phrases

Pick a keyphrase with high search volume and low competition to use as your focus keyphrase. These are the keywords that are most likely to drive organic traffic to your blog.

Additionally, consider long-tail keywords, which are longer, more specific phrases that often have less competition and can be easier to rank for.

A simple method to find related long-tail keywords is to enter your chosen keyword in the Google search bar. It will show you other relevant searches around your topic in the drop-down and also further down the page under “People also ask”. This will give you suggestions on what else to include in your article based on what people are actively searching for.

Once you have a list of target keywords, incorporate them naturally into your blog posts. Avoid keyword stuffing, as this can negatively impact your SEO. Instead, focus on creating valuable, informative content that includes your keywords in a way that feels seamless and natural.

On-Page Optimization

Optimize your blog post title

Create a compelling headline that inspires your ideal client to click on.

Don’t make it too long otherwise it will get cut off in the search results.
The ideal length for your blog post title is under 60 characters.

Use your focus keyword in the title to make it more SEO-friendly.

There are various tools you can use to get a little help with writing your headline, for example AIOSEO’s Headline Analyzer or CoSchedule Headline Analyzer.

Add a Meta Description

The Meta Description is the text that appears underneath the title on the search engine results page (SERP). It’s a short description of your blog post that highlights your promise and helps readers decide whether they want to click through or not.

It’s important that your promise accurately reflects your content otherwise users who click through will be disappointed and leave your website quickly, leading to a high bounce rate which negatively impacts your website’s ranking.

To optimize your Meta Description include your keyword and keep it under 160 characters so it doesn’t get cut off in the search result.

Focus on Readability

The structure and formatting of your blog posts play a significant role in SEO. By organizing your content in a logical and reader-friendly way, you improve both user experience and search engine visibility.

Organize your blog post into sections and sub-sections

Use the proper Heading tags: only one H1 for the main title, H2, H3 for subheadings.

Write clear paragraphs and make sure they are not too long. A big wall of text is discouraging to the reader.

Avoid writing long-winded sentences. Yoast recommends keeping your sentences under 20 words.

Make your content easy to scan by using bullet points, numbered lists, and bold or italicized text to highlight important points.

Use clear and legible font

Enhance your content with visuals like images, illustrations, infographics, or videos.

Add Internal and External Links

Link to related blog posts or pages on your website that provide additional value to your readers. This improves user experience and signals to search engines that your website content is comprehensive and authoritative.

It also helps search engines understand the structure and hierarchy of your website, making it easier for them to crawl and index your website effectively.

Here are some tips for effective internal linking on your coaching website:

  • Link to relevant content: Only link to pages that are genuinely related to the current topic and provide additional value to the reader.
  • Use descriptive anchor text: The text you use for the link should accurately describe the content of the linked page. Avoid using generic anchor text like “click here” or “read more”.
  • Link strategically: Place links within the natural flow of your content, not forced or disruptive to the reading experience.
  • Link to a variety of pages: Don’t just link to the same few pages all the time. Distribute links throughout your website to different relevant content.

Linking to high-quality external sources adds credibility to your content, demonstrating it is well-researched and supported. It helps search engines understand the context of your content and potentially improves your website’s SEO ranking.

Add Images and Videos

We already mentioned that including high-quality visuals in your blog post makes your content more interesting and engaging. This keeps your readers on your page which signals to search engines that your content is useful and deserves a higher ranking.

Use an appealing featured image and add visuals throughout your text to break up sections and paragraphs.

You can find royalty-free images on various sites like Canva, Pexels, Pixabay, Unsplash.

Make sure you size your images correctly before you upload them to avoid slowing down your website.

For the same reason, it is not recommended to upload videos directly to your website. Publish them on a video platform like YouTube or Vimeo first then add the embed link to your blog post.

Optimize your images with descriptive alt tags containing your keyword to help search engines understand the content and improve accessibility.

Use Categories and Tags to Organize Content

Using categories and tags for your blog helps you stay organized, improves user experience, and provides search engines with additional information about your content, which benefits your website’s ranking.

Think of categories as broad topics on your blog, like chapters in a book. Tags are specific details within each post, like keywords in an index.

Check the URL Slug for SEO-Friendliness

When you create a blog post, WordPress will autogenerate the URL pulling across the title of the post. This is not always ideal. Before you hit publish check your URL and optimize it for SEO.

The URL should be short and simple so it gets displayed in full in search results and the topic is clear to readers and search engines. Keep it under 60 characters.

Include a keyword or phrase. This helps search engines associate your content with relevant searches.

Remove unnecessary ‘stop’ words: Omit unnecessary words like “a,” “the,” or “and”.

Use hyphens to separate words (-) for improved readability and clarity. Avoid underscores or other characters.

Review your Content Quality

High-quality content is king, not only for engaging your readers but also for ranking higher in search engines.

Here are some tips on how to craft unique and relevant content for your target audience:

  • Create original content aligned with your expertise.
  • Share your unique voice, let your personality shine through.
  • Start with a strong hook that piques your audience’s interest.
  • Clearly state the purpose of your post and what benefit readers will gain.
  • Weave in personal anecdotes and stories from your coaching experience.
  • Solve a specific problem your reader might have.
  • Offer actionable tips and strategies your audience can apply in their lives.
  • Use language that triggers emotional responses.
  • Spark curiosity with thought-provoking questions.
  • Include videos and images to better illustrate your point.
  • End with a strong CTA (call to action) that motivates readers to engage further.

Promote your blog post

Once you’ve published your post don’t just let it sit there and wait for SEO to kick in. How long it takes for your SEO efforts to show results depends on many factors and is impossible to predict exactly. It typically takes 3 to 6 months to a year for more competitive keywords.

While SEO builds long-term visibility, promoting your blog posts actively increases immediate traffic and engagement, accelerating your reach and impact.

  • Encourage social media shares: Include a social media button in your blog so readers can share it with a simple click.
  • Share your post on relevant platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Use eye-catching visuals and compelling captions to entice clicks.
  • Email your subscribers: Send a newsletter announcing your new post and highlighting its key takeaways.
  • Engage in online communities: Share your post in relevant forums, groups, and communities where your target audience gathers. Be sure to follow their guidelines and contribute meaningfully.
  • Consider guest blogging on relevant websites to reach a wider audience and gain valuable backlinks.
  • Collaborate with influencers: Reach out to relevant influencers in your niche. They might be interested in sharing it with their audience.
  • Give your post more link juice: Link to your new post from other relevant articles on your website. This helps improve navigation and keeps visitors engaged.
